Tysons, Virginia—often referred to as Tysons Corner—is a modern urban center in Fairfax County that has seen remarkable transformation since the mid-20th century. Originally a rural crossroads community named after 19th-century landowner William Tyson, the area remained largely undeveloped until the early 1960s. The construction of Tysons Corner Center mall in 1968 marked the beginning of its evolution into a major commercial hub. Over time, Tysons grew into a symbol of suburban economic expansion, attracting global businesses and government contractors.

The difference between “Tysons” and “Tysons Corner” is primarily a matter of naming and modernization. “Tysons Corner” was the original name, reflecting the area’s early identity around a major retail intersection. However, as part of redevelopment efforts and urban rebranding, the name has increasingly shifted to just “Tysons” to reflect its ambitions as a full-fledged city center, complete with high-rises, public transit, and walkable urban infrastructure. Both names are still used interchangeably, but “Tysons” is now the preferred term in planning and business contexts.
